Sawara Grand Festival

“Sawara Grand Festival” is the general term for two festivals held in downtown Sawara, in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture: the Gion Festival held in July, and the Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival held in October. Known as one of the three big Kanto area parade float festivals, this tradition spans about 300 years. The Sawara parade float festivals are registered as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and the Sawara music and hand and arm dancing performed there are pieces of traditional culture that embody the essence of Sawara, outrivaling Edo. At “Furusato Matsuri Tokyo,” they will perform a special version of the dance based on choreography from the big three traditional Japanese dance families from the time when the dance was first created!
